Crimson Desert Drops 50-Minute Gameplay, Featuring Powerful Boss Fights and Combat Mechanics
Pearl Abyss has unveiled its most extensive gameplay preview yet for the highly anticipated action-adventure title, Crimson Desert, in a 50-minute gameplay video. Fans who have followed the game’s development will know it has been a long road since its announcement at G-Star 2019, alongside other Pearl Abyss projects such as PLAN 8 and DokeV.
Originally slated for a Winter 2021 release, Crimson Desert faced delays, with no confirmed launch window in sight. After a brief gameplay trailer resurfaced during Gamescom 2023, showcasing the game’s ongoing development, the latest reveal at Gamescom 2024 was even more significant, as it marked the first time the game was playable by the public.
I had the chance to experience the demo firsthand at Gamescom 2024, though the session was primarily focused on boss fights. The demo offered players the choice to face off against various bosses, diving right into the action without much context or narrative. The fights were challenging, but fortunately, the demo allowed players to resurrect after defeat, making it easier to continue without restarting every encounter, especially with the limited playtime available. The combat system impressed, with a heavy focus on combos and a satisfyingly weighty feel to each attack.
Visuals and Concerns
While the combat felt promising, the visuals left me with mixed feelings. Though the graphics aren't bad, they seem to inherit a certain roughness seen in Black Desert Online (BDO), which is also built on the same engine. The lack of anti-aliasing, a noticeable flaw in BDO, seems to persist in Crimson Desert. Hopefully, Pearl Abyss will address this issue before the game’s release.
Release Date and Features Still Unknown
Despite the hands-on demo and extended gameplay preview, Crimson Desert still lacks a confirmed release date. Furthermore, it remains unclear whether the game will include multiplayer support, a feature originally planned but now uncertain according to Pearl Abyss. The game's full feature set is still being finalized.
As a fan and returning player of Black Desert Online, I’m eager to dive into the world of Crimson Desert, explore its rich lore, and uncover all it has to offer when the game finally launches.
