AMD Indirectly Credits Apple for Inspiring Its Ryzen AI Max Chips, Despite Acknowledging Prior APU Efforts

AMD's VP Speaks on the Influence of Apple Silicon
During a recent discussion, AMD Vice President Joe Macri reflected on the parallels between AMD’s APUs and Apple’s M-lineup. While AMD has been pioneering integrated solutions for years, Macri conceded that Apple’s transition to custom silicon with unified CPUs, GPUs, and memory systems reshaped industry perceptions:
"We were building APUs while Apple was using discrete GPUs. They were using our discrete GPUs. So I don’t credit Apple with coming up with the idea."
However, Macri noted that Apple’s success demonstrated that users prioritize performance over whether a system uses integrated or discrete components, dispelling the long-held notion that high-performance graphics must be discrete.
