Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate Still in Development, More Updates to Come
After months of little to no news, series creator Yuji Horii confirms that Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate remains a key priority, with the development team “hard at work” on the project. The latest mention arrived during a weekend livestream of Horii’s radio show group, KosoKoso Hoso Kyuoku, as reported by Automaton. While he revealed no additional specifics, Horii noted that fans would begin to see updates “little by little,” reinforcing that the long-awaited JRPG is still very much alive.
Powered by Unreal Engine 5, Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate will mark a significant turning point for the franchise. Co-developed by the Japanese studio Orca—which previously contributed to both Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age and its Definitive Edition—the new game aims to shake up the command-based combat system that has defined the series. Aside from that glimpse, details have been scarce since Square Enix announced the project. Nevertheless, Horii’s latest affirmation should ease concerns that the project might be stalled or scrapped.
Meanwhile, other entries in the Dragon Quest universe are also forthcoming. Later this year, the long-established Erdrick saga grows with Dragon Quest I and II HD-2D remakes, scheduled to release on PC and consoles. These remakes follow the success of Dragon Quest III HD-2D, which launched last November, modernizing some of the earliest franchise titles while maintaining the series’ classic flair.
