Dungeons & Dragons Expands with New Video Games as Hasbro Scales Back Film Investments

Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) is marking its 50th anniversary with a surge in video game adaptations, reflecting the IP's enduring popularity. Following the massive success of Baldur's Gate 3, which earned Wizards of the Coast over $90 million in six months, Hasbro has confirmed that yet another D&D video game is in development.

Big Plans for D&D Video Games

In an interview with Bloomberg, Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks revealed that the company is doubling down on digital adaptations. Alongside the recently announced D&D projects, this latest title joins a growing list of upcoming games:

  • Starbreeze's Co-op Adventure: Set in the sprawling city of Waterdeep, this game is expected in 2026.

  • Resolution Games' VR Experience: A D&D Virtual Reality game announced earlier this year.

  • Invoke Studios' Unreal Engine 5 Game: Featuring potential PvP gameplay, this project comes from the team behind Dark Alliance.

This new game emphasizes the company’s focus on digital platforms as the primary way to engage fans.

Other Hasbro Game Projects

Beyond D&D, Hasbro is expanding its gaming portfolio:

  • Archetype Entertainment's Exodus: A sci-fi RPG with a star-studded cast, including Matthew McConaughey.

  • G.I. Joe Snake Eyes: In development at Atomic Arcade.

  • A Horror Game: Under production at Skeleton Key.

  • Magic: The Gathering Commander Game: A separate title from Magic: The Gathering Arena, currently in testing.

Hasbro is investing over $1 billion in its gaming ventures, allocating $100–$150 million annually to produce one or two major releases starting in 2026.

Scaling Back on Films

While video games are thriving, Hasbro is stepping away from co-financing film and TV adaptations. The decision comes after lukewarm performances of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and Transformers One. On this shift, Chris Cocks remarked:

"We want to reach fans where they want to play, and increasingly that is through digital expressions of their favorite brands."

What Lies Ahead for D&D Fans?

As D&D celebrates its golden anniversary, it's clear the franchise’s future lies in immersive, digital storytelling. With multiple games on the horizon, fans have much to look forward to, even as Hasbro pivots away from the silver screen.
