Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Is Playable on Steam Deck, But With Some Major Compromises

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the second entry in the Remake trilogy, is now confirmed to be playable on the Steam Deck despite its demanding PC system requirements. According to a new review by Steam Deck HQ, the game can maintain a target of 30 FPS through most gameplay sections, including some of the more open areas that stress hardware. To achieve this, players must enable dynamic resolution scaling, which can result in occasional blur and ghosting. Frame rates can also dip into the 20s when exploring towns filled with non-playable characters, mirroring one of the notable issues found in the PlayStation 5 release—the aggressive pop-in effect. Despite these setbacks, it remains impressive to see how well Square Enix’s latest Final Fantasy installment performs on a handheld device.

Meanwhile, a new modding project has emerged to address some of the PC port’s limitations. A work-in-progress mod named Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Fix, available for download on GitHub, introduces ultrawide support for any aspect ratio, offering a corrected field of view (FOV) and a centered 16:9 HUD. As this is an early build, some issues may occur, but the development signals a promising start for those wanting additional display options. Another community-created solution tackles the lack of in-game FOV settings: a Cheat Engine table provided by user dammy63 on the FearLess Cheat Engine forums allows players to tweak the FOV value manually. With more refined modding tools on the horizon, a standalone mod may follow to provide further customization without requiring Cheat Engine.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is now available on PC and PlayStation 5 worldwide, continuing Cloud Strife’s revamped journey and pushing the boundaries of portable and moddable JRPG experiences for fans.
