Microsoft Halts Windows 11 24H2 Update for Users with Certain Ubisoft Games
Microsoft has paused the rollout of the Windows 11 24H2 update for users who have specific Ubisoft games installed on their systems. The decision comes after reports that certain Ubisoft titles become unresponsive or display a black screen during gameplay, loading, or startup.
Affected Ubisoft Games
The following games are impacted:
Assassin's Creed Valhalla
Assassin's Creed Origins
Assassin's Creed Odyssey
Star Wars Outlaws (mitigation available but with potential performance issues)
Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora
What Happens?
After installing the 24H2 update:
Games might hang during startup or freeze during active gameplay.
Affected users may encounter a black screen, rendering the game unplayable.
In some cases, performance issues persist even with temporary mitigations.
Microsoft’s Response
To ensure users aren't affected, Microsoft has applied a compatibility hold for devices with these games installed:
Devices with these Ubisoft titles will not receive the Windows 11 24H2 update through Windows Update.
IT administrators can monitor the issue using safeguard IDs: 54437462 and 54580160.
What Should You Do?
Avoid manual updates: Microsoft advises against using tools like the Windows 11 Installation Assistant or media creation tools to force the update.
Workaround for affected systems: If a game hangs, close it using Task Manager (
Ctrl+Shift+Esc
) and await further fixes.
Resolution in Progress
Microsoft and Ubisoft are actively collaborating to address the issue. Once resolved, updates will resume for affected devices, and users will be notified.
