Newzoo's Latest Report Predicts Major Console Boost from Key Releases and Steady PC Growth

Gaming analytics leader Newzoo has unveiled its latest global games market report, highlighting significant growth opportunities across consoles and gradual, sustained progress within the PC gaming sector. The firm emphasized improvements in their analytics approach, including tighter integration with Newzoo’s Game Performance Monitor and the recent acquisition of Steam Data Suite—now known as Newzoo's Business Store Intelligence—to provide more accurate and comprehensive insights into the gaming market.

According to Newzoo’s Q1 2025 report, the global games industry is expected to return to growth across all primary platforms (Console, Mobile, and PC). Overall revenue growth is forecasted at a moderate 3.7%, indicating a steady but mature industry landscape.

PC Market Driven by Microtransactions and Consistent Engagement

The PC gaming sector is predicted to experience steady growth, largely powered by ongoing revenue streams from microtransactions, including in-game cosmetics, loot boxes, and battle passes. Games such as Fortnite and Roblox remain at the forefront, maintaining consistent player engagement through continuous content updates.

Regionally, growth dynamics differ: China is anticipated to witness a slowdown, whereas Japan's PC gaming sector continues to rise steadily, fueled by increased player spending and engagement.

Console Market Set for Major Surge with Blockbuster Releases

Contrary to discussions about consoles declining, Newzoo projects a notable boost in console sales, driven significantly by high-profile game releases slated for this year. The much-awaited launch of Grand Theft Auto VI is expected to prompt a surge in hardware upgrades, increasing the install base for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Major publishers developing games exclusively for these platforms stand to significantly benefit from this expanded user base.

Recent successful releases, such as Monster Hunter Wilds, have already demonstrated the strong market demand. Additionally, the launch of Nintendo Switch 2, accompanied by anticipated titles like Pokémon Legends: Z-A, will further stimulate the console market, catering to audiences across diverse demographics.

Mobile Gaming Market Reaches Maturity

Meanwhile, the mobile gaming market appears to have reached a state of maturity. Player growth rates have notably decelerated to below 3% annually, particularly in established markets outside of traditional growth regions. Eastern Asia, in particular, is experiencing notably lower player growth compared to other global regions.
