Elden Ring Movie Is Being Discussed, Says George R.R. Martin

George R.R. Martin has reignited talk of an Elden Ring movie during IGN Fan Fest 2025. The celebrated author, who first teased the possibility of a live-action adaptation several months ago, briefly discussed the project on stage, noting that there is indeed some talk about making a movie based on the hit game.

Martin, however, made it clear that his involvement in such a project might be minimal. "Well, I can't say too much about it, but there is some talk about making a movie out of Elden Ring. We'll see if the Elden Ring movie comes to pass and what the extent of my involvement was, I don't know. I'm a few years behind with my latest book, so that also limits the amount of things that I can do," he explained. The author’s primary focus remains on completing The Winds of Winter, the long-awaited sixth novel of A Song of Ice and Fire, which has kept fans in suspense since its inception in 2010.

In addition to Martin's remarks, Elden Ring's potential adaptation has also been touched upon by FromSoftware’s Game Director Hidetaka Miyazaki during an interview with The Guardian. Speaking on the subject, Miyazaki noted that while Elden Ring’s gameplay and atmosphere have won over millions, the narrative might not be inherently movie-worthy in its current form. He added that FromSoftware lacks the necessary expertise for such an adaptation and would require a strong, trusted partner. Interestingly, Sony—now the largest shareholder of FromSoftware’s parent company Kadokawa Corporation—has significant experience in adapting gaming franchises into live-action films and TV series.

While Elden Ring's immersive gameplay remains its strongest asset, the discussion of a movie adaptation opens up intriguing possibilities for how the game’s narrative and atmospheric depth might be translated onto the big screen. Whether Martin will be involved even in a consultative role remains to be seen, but his candid acknowledgment of his current commitments and the inherent challenges of adapting the game adds another layer of complexity to the project.

What do you think—could an Elden Ring movie capture the magic of the game, or would the story suffer in translation? Share your thoughts in the comments and join the conversation!
