Okami Sequel Announced with Hideki Kamiya Returning as Game Director
In an unexpected but welcome announcement at The Game Awards 2024, Capcom unveiled that a sequel to the beloved Okami is officially in development. The project, which sees Devil May Cry and Bayonetta creator Hideki Kamiya returning as director, marks a revival of the franchise that captured hearts with its stunning visuals, unique gameplay, and heartfelt storytelling.
A Revival with Kamiya at the Helm
The new game, currently being referred to as Okami Sequel, is a collaborative effort between multiple studios, including M-TWO Inc., Machine Head Works Inc., and CLOVERS Inc., the latter being Kamiya’s newly established studio. This marks a spiritual revival of Clover Studio, the team behind the original Okami. The teaser trailer showcased Amaterasu racing across a vast open field, hinting at a possibly more expansive world while maintaining the series’ iconic “painted” art style.
Capcom’s Statement
Capcom shared a few additional details about the project:
"The Okami sequel project is underway! Okami is a game critically acclaimed for its unique world, heartwarming story, and exciting adventures. Now, a new adventure in the same vein as Okami has been set in motion. Hideki Kamiya, director of the original Okami, will be the director of this project. What will the new adventures of Amaterasu and company be like? It will be some time before we greet you again, but we hope you look forward to this project."
No platforms or release date have been confirmed yet, but fans can expect updates as development progresses.
The original Okami, released in 2006, was celebrated for its breathtaking art style inspired by Japanese ink wash painting (sumi-e), innovative Celestial Brush mechanics, and compelling narrative centered on the wolf deity Amaterasu. With Kamiya back in the director's chair, expectations are sky-high for a sequel that can recapture the magic of its predecessor while expanding on its legacy.
