Painkiller Returns Fall 2025 with Modernized Gameplay and Online Co-op

Anshar Studios and 3D Realms have officially announced Painkiller, a thrilling reimagining of the classic first-person shooter franchise, during the Future Games Show: Spring Showcase 2024. The iconic fast-paced shooter will make its return on PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S|X later this year, with an exciting addition: online cooperative multiplayer support.

Classic Action Reimagined for a New Generation

In the new Painkiller, players will revisit the atmospheric Gothic environments and relentless demon-slaying action that originally defined the franchise. Set in Purgatory, your character is damned for past sins but receives one final chance for redemption. Tasked by the Creator, you must defeat Azazel, a fallen angel bent on unleashing his demonic forces upon Earth.

Players will encounter an expansive variety of enemies, including countless demons wielding unique abilities and three formidable bosses—Azazel's monstrous offspring, the Nephilim. Gameplay remains faithful to its roots with fluid movements like jumping, dashing, and grappling through massive biomes while wielding both iconic and newly designed weapons.

New Features and Multiplayer Co-op Gameplay

A significant enhancement in this modernized Painkiller is its online co-op support, allowing players to join forces to combat hordes of demonic enemies. The game introduces strategic tarot card enhancements, enabling players to upgrade their skills or even combine their powers with teammates for devastating effects.

At launch, gamers can choose among four distinct playable characters, each with specialized abilities:

  • Ink: Specializes in Energy abilities.

  • Void: Focuses on Health-related perks.

  • Sol: Equipped with Strength enhancements.

  • Roch: Tailored for increased Damage output.

Each character will offer a unique playstyle, encouraging strategic team compositions in co-op mode.

Awaiting Further Details

System requirements have not yet been disclosed, but Anshar Studios and 3D Realms have promised to release more details closer to launch. Stay tuned as further information becomes available.
