Qualcomm Eyes Dual-Sourcing for 2nm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 3 with Samsung and TSMC

Despite facing challenges with its 3nm GAA technology, Samsung is reportedly working on a 2nm prototype for Qualcomm, aiming for completion by the second half of 2026.

Samsung has struggled with low yields in its foundry business, which has impacted its ability to produce competitive chipsets. As a result, Qualcomm has relied solely on TSMC's 3nm 'N3P' process for its Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 2. However, Samsung's persistence in developing its 2nm node, codenamed 'Ulysses,' could pay off if it manages to meet Qualcomm's stringent requirements.

Future Prospects

According to rumors, Samsung is set to develop a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 3 prototype using its 2nm process. If successful, this could enable Qualcomm to leverage a dual-sourcing supply chain, benefiting from increased production capacity and potentially lowering costs. This move would also provide Qualcomm with more flexibility in managing supply chain disruptions.
