Silent Hill 2 on PS5 Pro Shows Marginal Improvements with Patch 1.06, but PSSR Issues Persist
Silent Hill 2, one of the most anticipated remakes, is still struggling to reach its full potential on the PlayStation 5 Pro despite developer Bloober Team’s efforts. The recently released Patch 1.06 brings some changes, but they are not substantial enough to elevate the experience on Sony's mid-generation console.
According to a technical analysis by Digital Foundry, the patch reverts the Performance Mode to use Temporal Super Resolution (TSR) instead of the controversial PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) introduced in a previous update. This change has yielded some benefits:
Stabilized Global Illumination and Reflections: TSR reduces the noise and flickering issues seen with PSSR.
Improved Camera Behavior: The disocclusion artifacts observed during camera movements are now minimized.
However, while these adjustments bring some improvements, the overall image quality on the PS5 Pro remains similar to the base PS5 version. The marginally better performance in this mode is likely due to TSR’s reduced processing demands rather than significant optimizations to the game's engine.
In Quality Mode, PSSR continues to underperform, with visible artifacts and inconsistent rendering still present. The technology's implementation appears to create more problems than benefits, leaving many players unimpressed.
Silent Hill 2’s Struggles on PS5 Pro
While the patch showcases Bloober Team’s commitment to refining the game, Silent Hill 2 still feels unoptimized for a console as powerful as the PS5 Pro. Many of the anticipated visual upgrades and performance boosts remain elusive, disappointing fans expecting a standout experience on the newer hardware.
