Skyblivion Showcases 40 Minutes of Gameplay and Developer Q&A, Confirms 2025 Release Goal
The highly anticipated Skyblivion mod, a total conversion project recreating The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion in Skyrim’s engine, received a new 40-minute gameplay showcase alongside a developer Q&A session. The latest demonstration highlights improved character progression, enemy scaling, and UI enhancements, as well as insights into the project’s sound design and future modding potential.
Character Progression and Enemy Scaling Updates
Long-time fans of Oblivion will notice changes in character progression, addressing the leveling issues of the original game:
Attributes return, but instead of being tied directly to skill progression, players receive a fixed number of points per level, similar to Fallout. This prevents suboptimal builds from becoming too weak against scaled enemies.
Enemy scaling follows Skyrim’s approach, but with a tiered system for different enemy species. Instead of jumping directly from imps to ogres, there are multiple power levels within each creature type, creating a smoother difficulty curve.
User Interface Enhancements & Quest System Potential
Skyblivion introduces a new UI system that makes it easier to track:
Character stats
Faction memberships
Quest progress
However, the team confirmed that Radiant Quests, a procedurally generated system from Skyrim, will not be included at launch. That said, the content is designed to allow modders to add features like Missives (Missives Mod on Nexus).
Sound Design: A Hybrid Approach
When asked about sound effects, the developers confirmed that Skyblivion will use a mix of new, Oblivion-sourced, and Skyrim-based sounds:
Custom sound effects created by a dedicated sound designer.
Extracted Oblivion sounds, where legally possible, from a player’s installation.
Skyrim sound assets, such as skeleton effects.
More detailed environmental sounds, including footstep variations based on terrain.
The project’s lead sound designer is also the creator of the Skyrim Audio Overhaul mod, ensuring high-quality audio design.

Skyblivion Nears Completion After Nine Years
The Skyblivion team began development in early 2016, and nine years later, the project is on track for a 2025 release. The team reconfirmed this goal in their latest video, emphasizing that they are in the final stretch of development.
Could Bethesda Announce Its Own Oblivion Remaster?
Despite Skyblivion nearing completion, persistent rumors suggest that Bethesda may be working on an official remaster of Oblivion. If true, this could create an interesting dynamic between the fan-made total conversion and an official remake.
With Skyblivion shaping up to be a faithful and enhanced remake, the question remains: Will Bethesda’s potential remaster compete with or complement the fan-driven project?
