Spider-Man Multiplayer Mod Brings Co-Op Web-Slinging to PC
A team of dedicated modders is breaking boundaries by adding multiplayer functionality to Insomniac's Marvel's Spider-Man on PC. The ambitious mod, teased in a recently released trailer, showcases up to 16 players swinging through the open-world streets of New York City. While multiplayer wasn’t a feature in the original game or its sequel, this mod is making it a reality.
What the Mod Offers
The Spider-Man Multiplayer Mod allows players to explore the city, complete missions, and enjoy free-roam activities with friends. Here are the highlights based on the modders’ FAQ:
Player Limit: Up to 16 players in one session.
Platform Support: Works on Steam and Epic Games Store versions of the game.
Mod Compatibility: Players can see each other’s suit mods if they’re installed on both ends. Animation mods work better if all players have them.
Connection Options: Join sessions via Steam invites or directly using the host’s IP address.
Story Mode: Some story missions are playable, but the focus is currently on free-roam content.
The project has been in development since August 2024, with plans to eventually port the mod to Marvel's Spider-Man 2 after its release.
A Look Back at Multiplayer in Spider-Man
While multiplayer was never officially part of the Spider-Man franchise, Insomniac previously explored cooperative gameplay. In 2021, the studio considered a game titled Spider-Man: The Great Web, featuring PvE melee combat with playable Spider family members like Spider-Gwen. Although the project was shelved, modders are now carrying the multiplayer torch forward.
Modding projects like this face significant hurdles, including:
Technical Limitations: Integrating stable multiplayer into a single-player framework is notoriously complex.
Team Dynamics: Mod teams are often volunteer-based, making them susceptible to disbandment.
Legal Risks: Sony could intervene to protect its intellectual property, as seen with Nintendo’s actions against the Breath of the Wild multiplayer mod.
Success Stories Offer Hope
Despite potential setbacks, the modding community has proven resilient. Successful projects like Skyrim Together, Sekiro multiplayer, and Just Cause 3 multiplayer demonstrate that it’s possible to bring multiplayer to single-player games. Similar efforts, like CyberMP for Cyberpunk 2077, show that the demand for co-op experiences is strong.
