AMD’s Radeon RX 7900 GRE Rumored to Reach End of Life: Disappearing from Retailers

The AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE (Golden Rabbit Edition) is rumored to be on the verge of extinction from the market, barely a year after its debut. Originally launched in China in 2023 and later released globally in early 2024, the RDNA 3-based GPU is rapidly vanishing from store shelves, with speculation pointing toward an official end-of-life announcement from AMD.

The Vanishing Act

Recent reports from Tweakers reveal dwindling availability of the RX 7900 GRE across major regions, particularly in the EU and North America. ASUS, one of the last manufacturers to stock the GPU, has confirmed limited quantities with no assurance of restocks from AMD. A quick scan of major retailers like Amazon, Newegg, and Best Buy corroborates this, with no new units available at MSRP. Any remaining stock is either open-box or priced close to $1,000, well above its original cost.

A Short Yet Memorable Run

The Radeon RX 7900 GRE, positioned between the RX 7800 XT and RX 7900 XT, was a niche solution targeting mid-to-high-range gamers. Equipped with a cut-down Navi 31 die, it featured 16GB GDDR6 VRAM, a 256-bit memory bus, and 5120 shaders, offering respectable performance at a 260W power rating. At launch, it competed effectively against NVIDIA’s RTX 4070 but leaned closer to the RX 7800 XT in terms of performance.

As AMD gears up for the RDNA 4-based Radeon RX 8000 series announcement at CES 2025, the RX 7900 GRE appears to be the first casualty in the shift to next-gen GPUs. While AMD has yet to confirm the discontinuation, this could mark a strategic pivot toward clearing inventory ahead of the new lineup’s release.

Despite its impending market exit, AMD will continue to provide driver support and warranty coverage for the RX 7900 GRE. Gamers and collectors hoping to snag one of these GPUs might want to act fast before it becomes a rare artifact of the RDNA 3 era.

Do you think AMD made the right call by phasing out the RX 7900 GRE, or would you have liked to see it stay longer? Let us know in the comments!
