Cyberpunk 2077 Surpasses 30 Million Sales Milestone, CDPR Gears Up for The Witcher 4
CD Projekt RED has hit a major milestone with Cyberpunk 2077, announcing during its Q3 2024 financial report that the game has now sold over 30 million copies since its launch in late 2020. Meanwhile, its expansion, Phantom Liberty, has achieved 8 million sales in just over a year—a testament to the studio’s ability to turn a troubled launch into a triumphant success.
Overcoming a Rocky Start
Despite its infamous launch, plagued by bugs and even removal from Sony’s PlayStation Store, Cyberpunk 2077 managed an incredible recovery. Thanks to relentless updates and the acclaimed Phantom Liberty expansion, CDPR transformed the game into a fan-favorite. Update 2.0 cemented its reputation as a polished masterpiece, allowing the game to flourish in the competitive RPG market.
CDPR's Michał Nowakowski, Joint CEO, celebrated the achievements:
“In less than four years since release, we’ve already sold 30 million copies of Cyberpunk 2077. I’m very happy to see a large, dedicated community coalesce around our Cyberpunk games.”
Looking ahead, the game and its expansion are set to reach new audiences with their release on Apple Silicon-powered Mac devices in 2025.
The Witcher 4 Moves Into Full Production
It’s not just Cyberpunk 2077 making waves. CDPR confirmed that The Witcher 4 (codenamed Project Polaris) has officially entered full-scale production. Nowakowski stated:
“The Polaris team has wrapped up preproduction and moved on to the most intensive phase of development.”
With The Witcher 3 still enjoying strong sales nearly a decade after its release, expectations are high for this next installment.
Meanwhile, work on Cyberpunk 2077’s sequel, Project Orion, continues under a separate North American team, allowing CDPR to divide its focus effectively between its two flagship franchises.
The studio's Q3 2024 revenue hit $55.7 million, with a consolidated net profit of $19 million. These numbers reflect not only strong game sales but also CDPR’s ability to maintain relevance in a crowded gaming industry.
