Dino Crisis Has Been Trademarked in Japan by CAPCOM, Reigniting Hopes for a Comeback
CAPCOM may be gearing up for a possible return of its cult-classic dinosaur survival horror franchise Dino Crisis, following notable revivals of other iconic IPs such as Onimusha and Okami. According to a recent report by Gematsu on Bluesky, CAPCOM trademarked the Dino Crisis name on March 4 in Japan.
Typically, trademark filings don’t necessarily guarantee new releases, since companies often register or renew trademarks to retain control of their intellectual properties. However, as highlighted by ResetEra forums member Jawmuncher, trademark filings in Japan often indicate more concrete plans for an IP’s future. Indeed, the recent Onimusha revival followed a similar pattern: CAPCOM trademarked the series before officially announcing new activities.
A Dormant, Yet Beloved Series
The Dino Crisis franchise—a survival horror series featuring dinosaur threats instead of the traditional zombies from CAPCOM’s Resident Evil—has remained dormant for years. However, CAPCOM has shown a slight resurgence of interest, recently releasing the first two Dino Crisis games on GOG with added modernized features such as:
Improved DirectX renderer
New rendering options, including V-Sync control
Gamma correction, integer scaling, and anti-aliasing
Higher rendering resolutions up to 4K
Enhanced geometry calculations, smoother animations, and cloud saves
These improved GOG releases suggest that CAPCOM still acknowledges Dino Crisis’ devoted fanbase, though it has yet to confirm any full-fledged revival. The series creator, Shinji Mikami, has commented in the past that CAPCOM might not see an immediate need to bring back Dino Crisis, given the ongoing success of the Monster Hunter franchise. Still, hopes remain high that this new trademark filing is a sign of things to come.
