Former Annapurna Staff Form New Studio to Oversee Private Division Franchises

A new game development company formed by former Annapurna Interactive staff is stepping in to manage the games and franchises previously owned by Private Division, a Take-Two Interactive subsidiary. This transition comes after last summer’s high-profile resignations within Annapurna, attributed to reported internal power struggles. Now, the team is poised to take charge of a portfolio of iconic titles.

The story began in November 2024, when Take-Two Interactive announced the sale of Private Division to an unnamed buyer for an undisclosed amount. According to Bloomberg, the buyer was private equity firm Haveli Investments. Haveli subsequently struck a deal with the ex-Annapurna staff, entrusting them with the stewardship of Private Division’s franchises. A spokesperson for Haveli confirmed the sale but declined further comment.

A New Era for Private Division’s IPs

Private Division is renowned for publishing standout titles, including Kerbal Space Program, Tales of the Shire, No Rest for the Wicked, and the Game Freak collaboration Project Bloom (working title). Notably, Tales of the Shire, a cozy farming game set in the world of The Lord of the Rings, is set to launch on March 25, 2025, promising fans a relaxing yet immersive experience.

Meanwhile, No Rest for the Wicked will continue to receive updates and support, ensuring its fanbase remains engaged despite the studio’s transition.

Staff Reshuffling and Uncertain Futures

The acquisition has resulted in Haveli inheriting around 20 employees from Private Division. However, with restructuring underway, layoffs are expected as the company repositions itself. Staff members have been advised to consider their employment options amidst the uncertainty.

Founded in 2017, Private Division quickly became a key player in publishing mid-sized indie games, including acclaimed titles like The Outer Worlds, Hades, and Rollerdrome. Its acquisition and subsequent transition represent a significant shift in the gaming industry landscape.

With a talented team from Annapurna Interactive at the helm, the future of Private Division’s franchises is brimming with potential. Fans of these games are eager to see how the studio will navigate this new chapter and expand upon the beloved IPs.
