Global DRAM Revenue Jumps 13.6% in Q3 2024, Samsung Holds Lead with 41% Market Share

The DRAM market experienced a significant 13.6% growth in revenue for Q3 2024 compared to the previous quarter, climbing from $22.9 billion to $26.02 billion, according to a new report from TrendForce. This growth is largely attributed to increased demand for DDR5 and HBM (High Bandwidth Memory), despite a decline in shipments of older LPDDR4 and DDR4 memory modules.

  • Samsung Electronics retained its top position with a 41.1% market share, though this represents a slight decrease of 1.8% quarter-over-quarter. The company still saw a 9% revenue increase, maintaining its dominance in the DRAM sector.

  • SK Hynix remained in second place, achieving a 13.1% growth in revenue while keeping its market share steady. Recent advancements, such as the unveiling of 16-Hi HBM3E memory stacks with 48 GB capacity, underline its competitive edge.

  • Micron Technology reported the largest growth among the top three, with a 28.3% revenue surge. The company's focus on HBM3E and server DRAM shipments contributed to its increased market share, which rose from 19.6% to 22.2%. Micron’s aggressive advancements, such as introducing HBM3E memory with 36 GB capacity and 9.2 Gbps speeds, further solidify its position.

While the top three players thrived, Taiwanese DRAM manufacturers faced notable challenges:

  • Nanya saw a 17.9% revenue decline, dropping from $307 million to $252 million.

  • Winbond and PSMC also reported revenue decreases of 8.6% and 27.6%, respectively.

At the same time, Chinese DRAM suppliers are gaining traction. Increased production and competitive pricing strategies are expected to draw OEMs and mobile brands, potentially influencing global contract prices for DRAM and HBM memory.

Despite the setbacks for some regional suppliers, the global DRAM market remains on an upward trajectory:

  • Major players like Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron continue to focus on advancing cutting-edge technologies and improving production efficiencies.

  • Industry analysts forecast further growth in Q4 2024, with Chinese suppliers playing a pivotal role in driving the market forward.

Are we witnessing the beginning of a major shift in the DRAM landscape with the rise of Chinese suppliers? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
