GTA VI May Feature Fortnite/Roblox-Style User-Generated Content, Rockstar in Talks with Creators
Rockstar Games is reportedly planning a major push into user-generated content (UGC) for Grand Theft Auto VI, potentially positioning the game as a creator-driven platform similar to Fortnite and Roblox. According to a report by DigiDay, Rockstar has been meeting with creators from both Fortnite and Roblox, as well as established GTA modders, to explore ways to integrate UGC into GTA VI’s online component.
This could mean that players and studios alike will be able to create and monetize custom in-game experiences, similar to Epic Games’ Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) and Roblox’s creator economy.
Rockstar’s UGC Plans Are Still in Early Stages
The DigiDay report, which cites three anonymous insider sources, claims that while discussions with content creators have begun, the details of the UGC integration remain unclear. One major question is whether Rockstar will offer a revenue-sharing model like Fortnite and Roblox, which allow creators to earn money from their in-game experiences.
Rockstar has already been moving towards a UGC model, as evidenced by its 2023 acquisition of Cfx.re, the team behind the hugely popular FiveM and RedM GTA Roleplay mods. This acquisition was seen as a shift towards an official embrace of GTA’s creator-driven community, paving the way for a more structured UGC economy in GTA VI.
Industry Experts See Massive Potential in GTA UGC
Pete Basgen, global gaming and esports lead for Wavemaker, believes Rockstar’s acquisition of FiveM was a key indicator of its UGC ambitions, stating:
“It is my firm belief that the reason that they purchased FiveM is exactly that — to spin up a metaversal universe of custom-built experiences, and potentially UGC items, with an attached UGC creator economy.”
He also notes that Rockstar is well-positioned to capture an older, more mature audience, bridging the gap between Minecraft/Roblox players and full-fledged open-world gaming experiences.
Meanwhile, Chad Mustard, COO of UGC gaming studio JOGO, sees huge potential in a Rockstar-backed creator economy, adding:
“If Rockstar embraces UGC, it’s a game-changer, plain and simple. The demand for creator-driven experiences is already massive, and this could unlock unprecedented opportunities for studios like ours. The economics are proven, the audience is there, and we’re ready to build. This is the moment GTA creators have been waiting for.”
Could UGC Lead to a Sooner-Than-Expected GTA VI PC Release?
A recent statement by Corsair Gaming CEO Andrew Paul suggested that GTA VI’s PC version may launch as early as early 2026—a much shorter gap compared to previous Rockstar releases. If Rockstar truly aims to push the metaverse and UGC side of GTA VI, it would make sense to launch the game on as many platforms as possible, as quickly as possible.
This trend towards UGC integration is growing across the gaming industry. For example, ARK: Survival Ascended introduced premium mods on consoles, while Overwolf’s CurseForge projects that playtime spent on UGC could surpass traditional game content by the end of the decade.
If Rockstar fully embraces user-generated content, GTA VI could redefine the open-world experience, allowing players, modders, and studios to create custom experiences like never before.
Do you think GTA VI should embrace a Fortnite/Roblox-style creator economy? Would this expand the game’s longevity, or should Rockstar focus on its core storytelling and gameplay? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
