Lenovo Legion Go S Becomes the First Third-Party Handheld Powered by SteamOS

Valve’s SteamOS is taking a significant step forward in 2025 with its expansion beyond the Steam Deck. At CES 2025, Lenovo unveiled the Legion Go S, the first officially licensed third-party handheld device to ship with SteamOS. This move marks a new chapter in Valve’s journey to bring its gaming-optimized operating system to a broader range of devices.

SteamOS Comes to Legion Go S

The Legion Go S - Powered by SteamOS offers the same seamless gaming experience users have come to expect from the Steam Deck. SteamOS is tailored for gaming, featuring a streamlined interface designed for controller input, quick suspend/resume features, and automatic updates for both the system and games.

Valve is working closely with Lenovo to optimize SteamOS for the Legion Go S, ensuring compatibility and performance match the high standards set by the Steam Deck. This partnership not only enhances the Legion Go S experience but also benefits users of other handhelds. A beta version of SteamOS will soon be available for download, offering improved compatibility for third-party devices.

Why Choose SteamOS?

SteamOS is a Linux-based operating system that runs tens of thousands of games on Steam, thanks to Valve’s Proton compatibility layer. With features like the Steam Verified Program, players can quickly see which games run smoothly on the platform. Beyond Steam games, users can switch to desktop mode to install other game launchers and software, offering flexibility not typically seen in console-like gaming systems.

Legion Go S and Beyond

The Legion Go S will join the SteamOS ecosystem, providing users access to the full Steam Library, Steam Cloud, Steam Chat, and game recording features. The device will ship with the same operating system as the Steam Deck, enabling users to enjoy seamless driver updates and hardware optimizations, all handled directly through built-in system updates.

Valve has also confirmed its commitment to expanding SteamOS support to additional devices, with continuous updates to improve compatibility and performance across the board.
