Mafia: The Old Country Reportedly Set for August 8 Launch, New Gameplay Reveal Slated for PAX East
2K and Hangar 13’s upcoming narrative-driven title Mafia: The Old Country is reportedly scheduled for release on August 8, according to details that briefly appeared in a now-updated Steam post. While the information was quickly removed, the listing was spotted by fans ahead of the publisher’s planned announcement, further substantiating the game's Summer 2025 window.
The potential leak precedes a highly anticipated developer panel at PAX East, taking place on May 8 at 7 PM BST / 2 PM ET, where Hangar 13 will debut a new gameplay trailer and offer a comprehensive retrospective on the franchise’s 23-year legacy. The panel promises insights into the making of Mafia: The Old Country, behind-the-scenes development stories, and an audience Q&A featuring Studio President Nick Baynes, Game Director Alex Cox, and Cinematics Director Tomas Hrebicek.
Announced during Gamescom 2024, Mafia: The Old Country represents a pivotal moment for the long-standing franchise. Departing from the modernized, open-world approaches seen in Mafia III, the new installment returns to its narrative roots with a linear, story-driven format, set in early 1900s Sicily. The game explores the origin story of the Mafia through the eyes of protagonist Enzo Favara, a young man hardened by a brutal past who seeks to earn his place in the Cosa Nostra under Don Torrisi’s family.
Built in Unreal Engine 5, Mafia: The Old Country promises high visual fidelity, intricate environmental detail, and immersive realism reflective of the franchise’s original noir aesthetic. Combat will balance brutal melee engagements—featuring blades and close-quarters brawling—with firearm-based shootouts, and players will also interact with period-specific transportation like horses and early motorcars. Although system requirements have not yet been confirmed, the leap to UE5 signals a technically ambitious entry.
As fans await the official gameplay showcase at PAX East, expectations remain high for Hangar 13’s reimagining of Mafia’s criminal heritage in what appears to be a carefully researched and historically grounded entry.
