New Combat Overview for Assassin’s Creed Shadows Highlights Enemies and Weapon Types

Ubisoft has dropped an in-depth combat overview for Assassin’s Creed Shadows, offering fans a closer look at attack strategies, defensive maneuvers, enemy types, and weapon variations tailored to each protagonist. Following the previous gameplay overview, this breakdown dives deep into the dynamic combat mechanics that players can expect when stepping into the roles of Yasuke, the Samurai and Naoe, the Shinobi.

The detailed combat guide, available on the game’s official website, features clips showcasing both characters in action. These short snippets highlight combat scenarios and demonstrate how each character’s playstyle creates distinct approaches to encounters.

Three Core Attack Types

Players will wield Light, Heavy, and Posture Attacks, though their execution varies based on the protagonist and chosen weapon. According to Ubisoft, “Choosing to fight as Naoe or Yasuke—and your choice of weapon—can alter these building blocks.”

Combat clips reveal similarities to Ghost of Tsushima's battle system, including mechanics like perfect dodges that render enemies vulnerable. For those who enjoy timing-based combat, Assassin's Creed Shadows introduces new layers of strategic depth.

Enhanced Defensive Mechanics

Defense options include Dodge, Parry, Deflect, and Block, with each protagonist bringing their unique flair to these mechanics:

  • Yasuke's Parry: Allows counterattacks immediately after a successful block.

  • Naoe's Deflect: Opens enemy flanks but leaves her exposed if surrounded.

Charles Benoit, Game Director for Assassin’s Creed Shadows, explains: “In essence, our core fight mechanics are the same for Yasuke and Naoe. But as a Samurai and Shinobi, respectively, they each have their own weapon types and abilities that make them feel very different from one another.”

Distinct Fighting Styles

  • Naoe: Agile and stealthy, excels in one-on-one encounters but struggles against groups due to her lighter armor and limited resources.

  • Yasuke: A powerhouse, armed with devastating combos and better equipped to take on multiple foes at once.

Adapting to Enemy Tactics

The overview highlights the importance of studying enemy attack patterns, offering advice on dealing with their unique tactics. Whether facing grunts or more formidable foes, players are encouraged to adapt their strategies accordingly.

The post also features short gameplay clips showing both protagonists in action, giving fans a glimpse of what’s in store when Assassin’s Creed Shadows launches.
