PlayStation 5 Pro Won’t Get a Cyberpunk 2077 Patch Due to Lack of Meaningful Improvements

It appears Cyberpunk 2077 won’t be receiving a PlayStation 5 Pro patch, as CD Projekt Red likely saw no substantial path to improve image quality on the upgraded console.

Speaking on their podcast, the experts at Digital Foundry speculated that while the PlayStation 5 Pro’s enhanced GPU could theoretically boost the game's Dynamic Resolution Scaling, the system already handles this well through the Game Boost feature. Therefore, the potential gains might not justify the development effort.

Why No PS5 Pro Patch?

One key area for improvement could have been Cyberpunk 2077's ray tracing features. However, the game was developed with an older SDK, meaning CD Projekt Red didn’t have access to optimizations like advanced ray-traced reflections or global illumination. To implement these, the developers would need to upgrade the SDK, a task requiring significant engineering resources and one that could introduce additional issues.

Another possible avenue would have been introducing PlayStation Super Spectral Resolution (PSSR), Sony’s AI-driven upscaling technology. Yet, as Digital Foundry highlighted, PSSR might not have delivered significant advantages over the already available AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR), which the game uses effectively.

Cyberpunk 2077 Still Sees Updates

Even without a PlayStation 5 Pro-specific update, CD Projekt Red continues to support Cyberpunk 2077. Last week’s update brought new customization options for V, expanded features for Photo Mode, and other quality-of-life improvements.

Meanwhile, the game and its critically acclaimed Phantom Liberty expansion remain available across multiple platforms, including PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and legacy consoles. However, note that Phantom Liberty is exclusive to current-generation systems and PC.

What do you think? Would a PS5 Pro patch have made a difference, or is Cyberpunk 2077 already pushing the limits of its platform? Share your thoughts below!
