Respawn Entertainment Quietly Cancels Another Unannounced Multiplayer FPS Project

Respawn Entertainment appears to have canceled yet another game, this time an unannounced multiplayer FPS, according to a LinkedIn post by former Executive Assistant and Production Coordinator, Emilee Evans (via The Game Post):

"The unannounced incubation project I was a part of for the past year was canceled this week, so I am joining the group of extremely talented and kind people in the games industry searching for a new role."

While details remain limited, previous job listings from Respawn specifically sought candidates with substantial experience in multiplayer FPS games, strongly suggesting this canceled project was in that genre—familiar territory for Respawn, given their success with franchises like Titanfall and Apex Legends.

It's uncertain whether this canceled project was indeed a new attempt at Titanfall, though reputable industry insider Jeff Grubb previously indicated that Respawn was exploring a new game in the beloved franchise. If so, it marks the second known Titanfall-related cancellation, following EA's decision to shut down the single-player game Titanfall Legends in early 2023.

This also isn't the first multiplayer FPS cancellation from Respawn in recent memory. Early in 2024, EA halted development on Respawn’s multiplayer FPS set in the Star Wars universe, citing the high costs associated with licensed IPs. However, that particular reason does not apply to a potential Titanfall sequel.

Currently, Respawn continues to focus heavily on the third and final entry in its critically acclaimed Star Wars Jedi trilogy. Additionally, Respawn remains actively involved as a publisher for an upcoming XCOM-like Star Wars strategy game developed by Bit Reactor. Bit Reactor praised their collaboration with Respawn in a June 2024 interview with PC Gamer:

"Respawn really treats us like an internal team. They've been really good to us. They encourage collaboration and communication between teams. They've been just flat out the best experience I've ever had in publishing."

Fans are left wondering what's next for Respawn Entertainment after this latest setback.
