Steam Deck AMD FSR 3 Frame Generation Mod Released, Boosting Performance in Select DLSS 3-Only Games
A new mod has arrived to bolster the Steam Deck’s gaming performance, enabling AMD FSR 3 Frame Generation in titles originally restricted to NVIDIA DLSS 3. The Decky Framegen Plugin—developed by GitHub user xXJSONDeruloXx—effectively substitutes the NVIDIA DLSS DLL with AMD’s FSR 3.1 DLL, letting Frame Generation function in games where it wouldn’t otherwise be supported.
How It Works & Games Affected
Replaces NVIDIA DLSS DLL: Once installed, the plugin allows games that only natively support DLSS 3 Frame Generation to run FSR 3 instead.
Broadened Game Compatibility: Titles like Black Myth: Wukong, Final Fantasy XVI, Hogwarts Legacy, and The Witcher 3 can all benefit from improved framerates on the Steam Deck.
Visual Artifacts: Some ghosting and other visual glitches (for example, in Final Fantasy XVI) are possible. Nonetheless, the mod can make previously borderline-playable titles more comfortable to run on the Deck.
Low-Baseline Framerates Caution: If a game hovers below 30 FPS before enabling Frame Generation, the resulting input lag may offset performance gains.
Installation & Usage
Content creator Deck Wizard published a video guide detailing how to set up and use Decky Framegen, walking viewers through the steps needed to replace the appropriate DLL and configure the plugin. While the process is relatively straightforward, users should note that minor troubleshooting may be required for each targeted game.
Steam Deck Growth Continues
Since launching in 2022, the Steam Deck has become an immensely popular portable gaming PC, influencing a wave of handhelds from various manufacturers. Valve followed up with a refreshed model, featuring an OLED screen and minor improvements, but has shown little interest in an annual iteration cadence. Despite the rapid expansion of the handheld market, the new plugin underscores the dedicated community’s efforts to push the Steam Deck’s performance and flexibility even further.
