Steel Hunters: Wargaming's Bold New Mech-Themed Hero Shooter
In a thrilling announcement at The Game Awards 2024, Wargaming, renowned for its iconic titles like World of Tanks, Warplanes, and Warships, has unveiled Steel Hunters, a groundbreaking mech-themed hero shooter developed using Unreal Engine 5. This marks a significant expansion for the studio as it ventures into new gaming territory.
Victor Kislyi, CEO of Wargaming, expressed his enthusiasm, stating:
This is a massive moment for Wargaming. We are best known for creating immersive and sustainable digital hobbies for millions of gamers around the world. With Steel Hunters, we’re pushing past our boundaries and bringing something completely new. Our ambition is to create one of the most exhilarating and compelling mech experiences ever.
Mike McDonald, Product Director, added:
Steel Hunters is the result of incredible teamwork and dedication of our talented people in Guildford, Prague, and our studios around the world. Over the past three years, we’ve worked relentlessly to create a game that offers a unique take on the mech shooter space by combining elements of different genres into one compelling mix. Today, we’re finally ready to show players what we’ve been building.
Game Overview
Set in a post-apocalyptic world, Steel Hunters revolves around the quest for a rare extraterrestrial resource known as Starfall. Corporations and factions have transformed Hunters into formidable combat machines, racing to dominate this scarce resource across the remnants of a once-thriving Earth.
The game uniquely blends mechanics from three popular shooter genres:
Hero Shooters
Battle Royale
Extraction
Players will choose their unique Hunter and engage in a PvPvE arena, where they will complete various objectives to level up and acquire gear. Each session culminates in an intense showdown at the extraction point.

Unlike traditional shooters that prioritize speed, Steel Hunters emphasizes strategy and knowledge. Players are encouraged to understand their Hunters' strengths, weaknesses, skills, cooldowns, and synergies to maximize their effectiveness and counter opponents. Wargaming promises dynamic maps that facilitate flanking and ambushing, with destructible environments adding to the tactical depth.
Customization is a key feature, allowing players to create unique gear combinations for their Hunters. Additionally, collectibles and cosmetics will enable players to express their personal style and individuality.
Upcoming Playtest and Release
A ten-day closed playtest is set to begin soon on PC, with sign-ups currently available. Players can also wishlist the game on Steam, with a full launch planned for 2025. Wargaming has hinted that console versions may be considered for future release.
