The Witcher IV Promises “Super Compelling, Very Meaningful” Romances for Ciri
CD Projekt RED is sharing more about The Witcher IV, following the reveal trailer at The Game Awards 2024. With Ciri confirmed as the new protagonist, players are naturally curious about how her journey will differ from Geralt's—especially when it comes to romance.
In a recent Q&A with Gamespot, the game's developers confirmed that romance will play a significant role in Ciri’s story, emphasizing that it will be handled with care and depth.
Game Director Sebastian Kalemba explained:
"Absolutely. It's a part of the way we make games. It is a part of human nature. Without that, I think we wouldn't be able to tell the very full story."
Executive Producer Małgorzata Mitręga added:
"It's an important part of life."
Kalemba continued by stressing the importance of meaningful storytelling in this area:
"We want to pay a lot of attention to it and make it super compelling and very meaningful. So it's not just to make a romance for the sake of making a romance. That's not the CDPR way."
Romance has been a staple of The Witcher series, evolving from collectible romance cards in the first game to deeper, story-driven relationships in later installments. With Ciri at the helm, the dynamic is set to change. In the established Witcher lore, Ciri hasn't had any serious love interests, largely due to her tumultuous life and rebellious spirit.
Fans are already speculating how CD Projekt RED will craft her romantic arcs while staying true to her character. Given the studio’s renewed collaboration with Andrzej Sapkowski, the original author, it’s likely they’ll receive some guidance to keep things authentic.
While The Witcher IV is still a long way off, with over 400 developers actively working on it, these teasers have only added to the excitement for what’s next in this beloved RPG series.
