TSMC Accelerates 2nm Trial Production at Kaohsiung Plant Ahead of Schedule, Targeting 5,000 Wafers

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is fast-tracking its next-generation 2nm chip technology, beginning trial production at its Kaohsiung plant earlier than expected. This follows the company’s recent commencement of 2nm production trials at its Baoshan facility, also targeting an initial 5,000 wafers per month. Taiwan continues to solidify its position as the epicenter of cutting-edge semiconductor manufacturing, with TSMC leveraging its Baoshan and Kaohsiung hubs to lead the charge in advanced technology.

Kaohsiung Plant Joins TSMC’s 2nm Journey

According to Economic Daily News, TSMC plans to start trial production at its Kaohsiung facility later this month. This marks a significant milestone in its roadmap, with mass production slated to begin by the end of the year. Early trial production at both locations underscores TSMC's response to the soaring demand for 2nm wafers, which reportedly surpasses that of the previous-generation 3nm nodes.

The semiconductor giant is anticipated to hit a combined monthly output of 40,000 wafers from both Kaohsiung and Baoshan once full production is underway. TSMC is also prepared to expand capacity at its Nanke plant should demand outstrip supply. By 2026, projections indicate monthly wafer output could reach an impressive 80,000 units across its facilities, a testament to TSMC’s dominance in advanced chipmaking.

Big Players in Line for 2nm Technology

TSMC’s 2nm process has already attracted major customers. Apple, a long-time TSMC partner, is expected to be the first to adopt the cutting-edge nodes, followed by industry heavyweights Qualcomm and MediaTek. This robust lineup highlights the immense demand for the new technology and positions TSMC to maintain its competitive edge.

Cost-Efficiency Initiatives

TSMC plans to introduce its CyberShuttle service in April 2025, enabling clients to share sample wafers for testing. This collaborative approach reduces costs for partners like Apple, Qualcomm, and MediaTek, further strengthening TSMC’s value proposition.

Competition and Market Implications

Despite TSMC’s aggressive push, its primary rival, Samsung, has yet to pose a significant challenge at this level of chipmaking. With the Taiwanese giant securing a commanding lead in 2nm production and demonstrating a clear strategy to meet demand, it solidifies its dominance in the semiconductor market.

As TSMC's trial production kicks off at Kaohsiung and expands to its other facilities, the company is on track to revolutionize the market with its unparalleled 2nm technology.
