TSMC Achieves New Milestone with 2nm Process: Trial Production Yields Exceed 60%
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has reached a significant milestone in its development of the 2nm process, with trial production yields exceeding 60%—a result that surpasses initial expectations. This achievement comes as TSMC prepares for mass production, which is slated to begin next year, and continues to advance its 3nm ‘N3P’ technology for various clients.
The news of TSMC's success in exceeding the 60% yield mark for its 2nm process is a testament to the company's dedication to pushing the boundaries of semiconductor technology. This achievement puts TSMC ahead of its competitors, as Samsung, which is reportedly developing an Exynos chipset using a second-generation 2nm process, codenamed ‘Ulysses’, has not yet confirmed its own yield counts.
The demand for 2nm wafers is reportedly higher than TSMC's 3nm variants, indicating a promising market outlook for the company. TSMC is expected to commence actual production sometime in 2025, with plans to increase yields to 70% before major clients like Apple, Qualcomm, and MediaTek begin placing orders. To meet this demand, TSMC plans to establish two 2nm fabrication plants, potentially achieving a monthly production capacity of 40,000 wafers.
While there is speculation about the iPhone 17 series featuring a 2nm SoC, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggests that the first cutting-edge A-series silicon may not debut until 2026 with the iPhone 18 lineup. However, Apple is anticipated to be the first recipient of the initial batch of 2nm shipments, following a visit from COO Jeff Williams to ensure the company's priority status.
