VESA Updates ClearMR and DisplayHDR True Black Standards with New Performance Tiers Ahead of CES 2025
The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) has announced significant updates to its ClearMR and DisplayHDR True Black certification standards, introducing new performance levels to meet the demands of next-generation high-end displays. These updates come as manufacturers like LG, Samsung, MSI, and GIGABYTE prepare to incorporate the new standards into their upcoming gaming and content creation monitors.
Set to be showcased at CES 2025, the updated certifications aim to elevate display technology by improving motion clarity and HDR performance, particularly for gamers and content creators who require precise visual fidelity.
The DisplayHDR True Black 1000 certification represents a major milestone for OLED displays, as achieving 1000-nit peak brightness for HDR content has long been a challenge for this technology. By introducing this new performance tier, VESA ensures that products meeting the standard deliver an enhanced HDR viewing experience with unparalleled color accuracy and depth. Speaking on the update, Roland Wooster, Chairman of the VESA task group, highlighted the significance of this breakthrough:
"The ability for OLED displays to achieve 1000-nit peak brightness for HDR content represents a significant breakthrough for the technology and a key cross-over point into content creation applications. By adding a new 1000 performance tier to our DisplayHDR True Black standard, VESA assures consumers that certified products have successfully passed a robust set of test criteria and represent a premium standard for OLED HDR displays."
Alongside the HDR improvements, VESA has expanded its ClearMR standard to include three new tiers: ClearMR 15000, ClearMR 18000, and ClearMR 21000. These tiers are designed to enhance motion clarity by reducing blur, a critical factor for maintaining image quality in high-speed visual content like gaming or fast-paced video production. The ClearMR standard assigns numerical values to motion blur intensity, providing consumers with a clear metric to compare display performance.
The industry has already begun adopting these enhanced standards. LG, for instance, has announced the 27GX79A, the first OLED gaming monitor to receive ClearMR 21000 certification. This display promises exceptional motion clarity, making it a frontrunner for gaming enthusiasts and professionals. Similarly, GIGABYTE, MSI, and Samsung have revealed plans to integrate the updated VESA standards into their flagship models, offering gamers and content creators improved options for their setups.
