Wartorn Is a Fantasy Real-Time Tactics Game with Roguelite Elements Set for Spring Debut in Early Access
Dallas-based developer Stray Kite Studios has unveiled Wartorn, an upcoming real-time tactics game with roguelite elements. The game is set in a fantasy realm torn apart by extremism and unraveling ancient bonds, focusing on two elven sisters trying to survive and reunite with their family. Throughout the adventure, players will face difficult choices—such as who gets fed or which lives should be spared—and must confront moral dilemmas about violence and sacrifice.
A Deeper Look at Wartorn
The development team includes Creative Director Paul Hellquist (of BioShock and Borderlands 2 fame) and CEO Shovaen Patel (known for Orcs Must Die!). Hellquist says Wartorn challenges players to find hope and purpose despite grim circumstances, while Patel highlights the focus on bringing together art, tactical depth, and emotional resonance.
On the gameplay front, Wartorn blends dynamic real-time tactics with elemental forces like fire, water, and lightning, letting players, for instance, ignite tar to burn foes or exploit water to amplify electrical shocks. Terrain is destructible, adding further chaos and unpredictability to each battle. There’s also a slow-time feature that allows players to pause the action for precise command inputs. Roguelite-style progression secures heirlooms, upgrades, and new abilities that carry over between runs for those willing to persevere.
Visually, Wartorn uses a distinctive painterly style—subject to taste—coupled with dark fantasy themes and moral quandaries. Stray Kite intends to launch Wartorn this Spring in early access on both Steam and the Epic Games Store.
