Yoshida Says He’d Have Resisted Sony’s Live Service Push, Thinks Bloodborne 2 Isn’t Coming Until Miyazaki Is Free

A new interview from Kinda Funny Games features Shuhei Yoshida, a thirty-year PlayStation veteran, reflecting on how Sony pivoted toward live service titles right after Herman Hulst took over Yoshida’s role. In the interview, Yoshida recalls that the previous approach was heavily rooted in premium single-player experiences—like God of War—while the new strategy added resources dedicated to service-based games.

Yoshida comments that, if he’d stayed at the helm, he might have resisted the live service emphasis, laughing that Sony’s leadership may have replaced him for precisely that reason. He acknowledges that Sony recognized the risk and simply provided more resources, rather than cutting back on single-player. As an example of success, Yoshida points out the unexpected triumph of Helldivers 2, which defied industry odds and became a massive hit.

The interview shifts to a long-standing subject of debate: why Bloodborne has never gotten a sequel or a proper remaster. Yoshida says he suspects Hidetaka Miyazaki—the visionary behind Bloodborne—doesn’t want anyone else to develop it while he’s busy. In Yoshida’s view, FromSoftware and Sony both respect Miyazaki’s stance, resulting in silence for the fan-favorite IP. Since the director is juggling other huge titles like Elden Ring, Yoshida surmises that no Bloodborne 2 is likely until Miyazaki’s schedule finally frees up. However, with Sony recently becoming the largest shareholder of Kadokawa Corporation—FromSoftware’s parent—one can’t rule out the possibility that Sony might nudge him toward a return to Yharnam.

Would you have welcomed Sony’s big shift to service-driven games if it meant risking fewer major single-player titles? And are you still holding hope that Miyazaki will eventually revisit Bloodborne? Let us know in the comments.
