Housemarque CEO: Saros Was Only Possible Thanks to Sony's Acquisition, Budget Near Alan Wake 2's €70 Million
Ilari Kuittinen, CEO of Housemarque, recently spoke with Finnish publication Helsingin Sanomat, explaining that the studio’s upcoming PlayStation 5 game, Saros, would have been impossible without Sony's acquisition. Kuittinen pointed out that, despite certain cultural changes at the studio—such as adopting Sony’s HR practices—the acquisition significantly increased Housemarque’s financial resources, enabling them to relocate to new offices and undertake such an ambitious project.
According to the report, the budget for Saros is reportedly close to €70 million, comparable to Alan Wake 2. This figure underscores Sony's financial backing, providing Housemarque the freedom and resources to push creative boundaries. The game officially entered full-scale production in 2022.
Saros was first introduced at February’s PlayStation State of Play through a cinematic trailer that teased its mysterious setting and narrative. Although gameplay specifics are limited at this time, it appears the game will feature mechanics reminiscent of Housemarque’s previous hit, Returnal, with worlds reshaping upon player death and permanent progression systems designed to enhance the experience.
Saros is scheduled for release on PlayStation 5 in 2026.
